Home-learning is changing this term. Instead of weekly tasks from the grid, we are reducing children’s grid home learning in order to focus primarily on reading, spellings and times tables.

Therefore, children will now be expected to complete at least 3 tasks from the choice chart every other week.  They can choose which ones they would like to do and be creative. Grid tasks are due in on a Tuesday. Please ensure these are completed to a high standard. Along side this, they will need to complete compulsory daily reading, times table and spelling practise.

Reading:

As a result of the new changes, all children will be expected to read at least 5 times a week in addition to reading in school. This must be recorded in their reading record. We are happy for children to record themselves but would like parents/carers to read with their child at least twice a week to improve their fluency skills. The adult can then write a comment and sign the reading records. Reading records are checked on a Monday.

Times tables:

Children will also be asked to continue to practise their times tables at home. This can be done through TT Rockstars (each child has a log-in) or play games we have shown them in school. Progress will be tracked through TT Rockstars and class tests.

Spellings:

Also, children need to learn their spelling list words for the test each week. The children might want to complete this by using the ‘look, cover, write, check’ method or by using word aware activities. Spelling will be tested on a Friday.

Please remember that we will provide resources for home learning where possible and that there is a home learning club that runs daily. Home learning club runs before school from 8.00am – 8.45am and at lunch time. Here children can access the internet using computers or iPads if needed.

Your child will have their new home learning grid as of today.

Thank you for your continued support,

Year 5 team
