Welcome back! We hope you all had a lovely Christmas break with your family and friends. We are looking forward to the term ahead.

Maths:

We are kicking off the half term by using clues and problem solving to find the missing present that one of the Wise Men has lost on their journey. We will be creating crowns using 2D shapes, considering which 3D shape the present could be and using symmetry to identify which wrapping paper the gift is wrapped in.

We will then be continuing with learning various mental strategies for calculating using 2-digit numbers. This will include addition and subtraction. We’ll continue to practise our numbers bonds to 10, 20 and 100 as well as our 2x, 5x and 10x tables.

English:

In English we are stepping inside the castle walls to learn all about Knights! We will be writing WANTED posters for Knights courageous enough to save the Princess, describing characters that we might find inside a castle such as trolls, witches, wizards, dragons and learning the story of ‘Billy the Not So Brave Knight’. We will use this story to help us write our very own finding tale.

History:

Our topic this term is ‘Who was the Lady of the Lamp?’ where we will explore the life and work of Florence Nightingale. We will consider the impact that she had on nursing and how nursing has changed over time. We are sure that the children will be very interested and excited about this topic.

Science:

In Science we will be exploring different natural and man-made materials and their uses. We will be sorting, classifying and describing properties of materials and using our knowledge to find the most suitable material to make a lamp (just like Florence Nightingale’s!)

Spellings & Times tables:

Spellings & Times tables will be sent out by the end of the first week back. Don’t forget to use TT Rockstars to practise those calculations! Please also continue to practise Rainbow Words as these are being assessed weekly in class.

Thank you for your continued support! The Year 2 team 🙂
