Firstly, a huge thank you to you all for all the lovely cards and presents that we have received.
The children have enjoyed their last week of 2020 with Christmas activities, watching the Cinderella pantomime and making Christingles for our service tomorrow.
It has been a very strange and difficult term but the children have shown great resilience to get this far. We have asked the children to complete one task over the holidays ready for our maths lessons in the first week back – telling the time. Please encourage your child at every opportunity to tell the time on a normal (analogue) clock which will help with our activities when we return.

Dear parents/carers,
A huge thank you to you all for getting to grips with the new arrangements for dropping off and picking up at the end of the day.
However, we have noticed that quite a lot of children are arriving earlier than the Year 4 start time of 8.55am.
It would be helpful if you could try and stick to this time as we are using the same entrance as Year 3 so want to avoid crossing ‘bubbles’ if we can.
We understand that some children will arrive a bit earlier as they have other siblings being dropped off in the earlier time slot but if they can wait at the gate until our time. This means the children can then come into school immediately rather than waiting on the playground especially in the current weather.
The gates will remain open until 9.05am.

Due to the photographer being in on Tuesday 13th, we have decided to move our Celtic day to Friday 16th October.
As we will be spending some time outside, could the children come to school with spare pair of shoes in case of mud. We will also be using face paints to show their clan markings, so let us know if your child is allergic or unable to wear face paints.
If your child does not wish to dress up, please make sure they are in school uniform.
Could we also ask for any large pieces of cardboard that you could spare? Please bring these in on Thursday or Friday.

This Friday, as part of Hello Yellow day (Friday 9th October), we will be completing some outdoor activities throughout the day.
The children will need to come to school in their PE kit and they can also wear something yellow to support the day such as a hair band, t -shirt, headband etc. (This means the children will come to school in PE kit on both Thursday and Friday this week.)
Could the children also please make sure they bring either wellies or a pair of shoes that they don’t mind getting a bit muddy as we will be going over to Forest School. They will also need a waterproof coat just in case!
On Tuesday 13th October, Year 4 will be holding a Celtic day to complete their history learning.
On the day, we would love the children to come dressed as a Celt (ideas below).
During the day, the children will have a go at making bread, dying their own bracelets, weaving and will even have a Swordfish versus Turtle clan battle!!!!
We will end the day with a Celtic story-time around the camp fire.

As part of our history learning this term, we will be looking at some of the history right on our doorstep.
On Wednesday 23rd September, Year 4 will be going on a local history walk in Wormley. We will be walking to the Top-field Cozens Grove behind Broxbourne School where there is a medieval road. We will also be looking at the buildings within Wormley and their history.
Could we ask for all the children to come to school in comfortable shoes that you don’t mind getting a little bit muddy and a raincoat. If the weather is too bad, we will postpone to another day.
They can also bring a healthy snack and their water bottle. We will be back in school before lunchtime.
It has been great to see so many children in over the last week. They have all been so excited to be back and have settled back to school quickly, even with some new rules and routines.
Today we have uploaded the home learning grid for this half term onto Google Classroom. These activities are some of the creative tasks that the children can complete over the half term We are asking for 3 to be completed before half term in October. There are a lot of tasks linked to our history topic of the Celts which we will start in a few weeks time. Encourage your child to be as creative as possible as we love to see their imaginative projects.
Alongside these creative tasks, we also expect the children to read at least 5 times a week in addition to reading in school (all have a book to bring home) and have their reading record signed by an adult/carer each time. We will be reading with each child over these first few weeks to check they are on the correct level, not just for fluency but also understanding. 
Each child will also need to continue to learn their times tables. At the end of year 4 there will be a national multiplication check (hopefully) which we will prepare the children for, but we do need your support to encourage your child to learn any times tables that they are unsure of. Using TT Rockstars is a great way to do this. Please ask for their log-ins if unsure.
Finally, all the children will have been sent home with a folder with their spellings for the week. This week we are focusing on double consonants which is a year 2 spelling pattern but always causes issues. The children have already had a spelling lesson in school where we have spoken about the rule and how to use it. Their home learning is to complete the ‘look, cover, write, check’ sheet and complete 4 sentences using 4 of the spelling words. This needs to completed neatly and using the word in the correct context. Some may need to check the meaning in a dictionary first. This sheet should be returned by Friday, after which they will be tested on the words. At the moment, all children will have the same words to learn but some may be given words more suitable to their needs over the next few weeks.

Year 4 team
Welcome to all year 4 children and parents/carers,
We are excited to finally meet our new classes after such a long time away. We hope you had a restful summer and the children are raring to go in their new year group.
We understand that some may feel a little nervous about returning to school, but be reassured that our focus will be on well-being and re-connecting with each other.
Some parts of the day will have been adapted to fit the new expectations such as start and finish times.
Year 4 will start between 8:55 – 9:05 am at the back gate where they will be met by a member of staff to direct them into the school. Teachers will be in the classroom to welcome them back. We finish at 3:20pm where parents/carers will be allowed onto the KS2 playground to wait for their children. Please be mindful of social distancing procedures.
Children will need to bring their own, named water bottle and their lunch, if choosing a home packed lunch (the kitchen will only be providing cold lunches at the moment).
As we are unable to hold a ‘Meet the Teacher’ afternoon, more information will be emailed to parents/carers this week.

Next half term, year 4 will be changing the day that they will have PE and French.
This will change to a Wednesday just for the six weeks and will change back to Thursday after Easter.

This term has already been jammed packed with super learning.
In English, we have read ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’ by Phillip Pullman and have produced writing focused on speech punctuation. We are now looking at a non-fiction text about a spy keyring. The children have shown great imagination to describe what their keyring will do. James Bond – beware!
In maths, we have spent the last few weeks learning about measures. This week has been focused on time. We have been quite concerned with the amount of children that are unable to tell the time on an analogue clock. If you are able to support this key life skill at home, we would appreciate it. Our focus in Year 4 is to convert 12 hour clock to 24 hour which has been very difficult as many do not know the basics.
In history, the children have learnt about the Romans and their impact on Britain and have been able to make comparisons with life in Roman and Celtic times.
In science , we have begun to look at sound and where it comes from. This has been a great link to our music sessions with a dedicated music teacher.
Upcoming events:
Next week, Roving Books are visiting the school on Thursday. Each year group will have time to browse the books available and there will be time after school for parents to look too. More details will be emailed.
Fair Trade enrichment day – Friday 14th February. The whole school will be undertaking different tasks linked to their area of Fair Trade. Year 4 will be looking at sugar.
