Living History day

Oct
30

On Friday, 20th October, we opened the doors to our museum galleries. The aim of the morning was to share the historical enquiries of the term with the children’s families and to enable the children to justify their findings. Each class had a question which formed the basis of their enquiry such as ‘Who was to blame for the Great Fire of London?’ or ‘Vikings, raiders or traders?’.

The children set up artefacts, activities, dramas, games and other learning activities to communicate what they had learned. Many children dressed in the costumes of the era in history they were studying.

It was an amazing morning and there was a real buzz around school. Our local curator from Lowewood Museum in Hoddesdon, Catherine Hammond, visited for the morning and was really impressed, writing,

” I honestly was so impressed by the quality of the displays, the work and the learning – especially the confidence of the pupils as they talked me through their activities, and the thoughtfulness of their justification. It’s a long time since I have seen history showcased so well in a school”

Here are some photos from the morning..

Wormley Primary Museum is open on Friday!

Oct
17

It’s only four days until our living history morning and the opening of Wormley Primary Museum.

Take a step back in time to visit the time of the dinosaurs, explore the pyramids of Ancient Egypt (make sure you don’t get mummified in the process) and solve a historical crime scene – ‘Who started the Great Fire of London?’

Each year group will be sharing their learning in their very own museum galleries.

Opening hours: 9:15 to 10:15am this Friday (20th October). Everyone welcome!

Help! Resources and skills needed

HELP!

The Year 1 team are in desperate need of some equipment and skills that you may be able to offer. Some of you may be aware from September Year 1 have continued the child initiated learning approach from reception. The children are really benefitting from this but we have big plans of developing the indoor and outdoor area further. If you or someone you know could help us with sourcing the following we would be very grateful:

  • Wooden pallets for a mud kitchen and bug hotel.
  • Logs
  • Sports equipment
  • Two wheeled bikes and helmets
  • Small world toys (e.g. small animals, dinosaurs, people, dolls house, garage)
  • Someone with a van or trailer to transport branches from the woods for den building.
  • Someone with skills and time to help us construct a mud kitchen with the pallets.

Many thanks

Developing a language for learning: Learning Words

Our social learning this year is all about 3 new learning words: collaborate, justify and reflect.

At our first INSET day of the year, teaching staff and governors discussed and sorted a range of ‘learning words’ into three groups: those we thought that were ‘in the bag’ and  used confidently by pupils, those in the ‘storage bag’ that would be important but for another time and three words in the ‘carrier bag’ that we thought were the most important for the children this year.

Collaborate, justify and reflect have been chosen and will be developed with the children through enrichment days, lessons, collective worship and just about any learning the children engage in this year.

Look out for  opportunities to join in with our social learning. Your first opportunity will be Living History day (20th October) where the children plan to ‘justify’ the outcomes of their enquiries about a period of British history. You will help decide how well they have justified their findings!

Opening of Pupil Parliament

Oct
9

Many congratulations to our newly appointed Pupil Parliament members who have been voted by their classmates to represent them this year.

Each candidate presented to their class and convinced them that they have the skills and ideas to make a difference to school life.

Following the first meeting, the representatives will be talking to their classes about what they aim to achieve this year.
