‘When you were…’

Working with storyteller Mike Dodsworth and visual artist Andy D’Cruz children from Wormley Primary School have been collecting stories from family members about when they were a child.

The project was launched with an assembly featuring a story form Mike that captured the imagination of the children.  Inspired by Mike and Andy the children a created their own stories and artwork.

To round of the week parents attended a whole-school assembly on Friday where the children shared some of their stories and had one more chance to hear a tale from Mike. After the assembly the children had the opportunity to share their individual creations with the parents back in their own classrooms.

When the teachers were 10…

After school the teachers had a session with Mike and Andy. Have a look at their memories of when they were 10!

Can you match a memory to a teacher?

Can you solve this Riddle?

Two legs is on three legs with no legs.

Four legs takes no legs from two legs.

Two legs throws three legs at no legs

Two legs is on three legs with no legs.

…We did and we used it to create a picture in our heads then we told the story.

‘Keep telling your family stories so they go round and round. If you don’t they will be lost forever’- Mike

A Hertfordshire Project

The project includes two other Hertsfordshire schools and has been coordinated by Herts for Learning. Funding has been provided by the Royal Opera House Bridge and Heritage Lottery Fund.

The project culminated in a celebration event at each school with a guest appearance by Jess Smith, the internationally renowned Scottish Traveller Storyteller.

Project aims:

  • Children and communities will see their cultural traditions valued
  • Engaging parents & bringing generations together through story
  • Through the project there will be opportunity for the whole school and wider community to learn about other cultures
  • Participating children will have opportunity to work alongside professional artists
  • Teachers will be given skills in the use of storytelling to promote cultural inclusion.
